Solar PV with Home Backup in Godalming
Here is an insight into the Sigenergy solar PV and battery system we recently installed in Godalming.
This was a large 9.31 kWp system with 15 kWh of battery storage, EV charging and whole-home backup. Let’s talk through the design choices that led to this home saving £’2131 a year on their energy bills!

Their Solar PV System
This is an overview of the solar PV and battery system we installed for this home in Godalming, Surrey.
In 2007, Grey Lea House appeared on Channel 4’s Grand Designs for its striking Art Deco style. However, the current owners wanted to bring this home into the current century by installing some modern technology. To help them achieve this, we installed 19 x Aiko Neostar 3S 490W All Black N-Type Mono solar panels. With their roof space split East and West, we could use both orientations for this 9.31 kWp system, which is estimated to produce around 6,628 kWh annually.
To mitigate shading from surrounding trees, we chose to split these panels into 4 strings. These all run to a Sigenergy system consisting of a 10kW SigenStor EC and 15 kWh of battery storage.
This Surrey home uses around 8,700 kWh a year, so maximising production and correctly sizing battery storage to allow for off-peak charging was essential. Check out our blog to find out how to maximise your battery storage. After a G99 application with SSEN, the site was approved for a 7.38 kW export rate. However, since this system is split across East and west-facing roofs, production rarely gets above 7 kW.
Why Choose a Sigenergy System?
Sigenergy have taken over the solar and battery market, and it’s for a good reason. Despite being a relatively new company, founded in 2022 by the former president of Huawei’s solar division, they are already the number 1 battery brand in Australia. Sigenergy focuses on developing cutting-edge all-scenario energy solutions, with products ranging from energy storage systems to solar inverters and EV chargers. So let’s have a look at why it was the perfect solution for this UK home.
Stackable Battery Solution
Whole Home Backup
More homeowners are looking for home backup solutions! Whether this is due to worries about energy security or simply to make neighbours jealous during power cuts. The Sigenergy HomePro Gateway offers a fantastic solution to the home backup problem. The UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) function of the gateway means that homeowners find out about power cuts via a notification on their phone rather than through a loss of power. If you are considering a whole home backup system, Sigenergy offer one of the best!
An Ecosystem NOT An Inverter
As more of our homes become “smart” enabled, sometimes it is nice to keep things simple. Sigenergy offers 2 excellent EV charger options that allow you to manage your low-carbon technologies through a single app. At this home in Godalming, we installed a 7.3kW AC EV charger, which is as feature-packed as the rest of the Sigenergy devices. The Sigenergy car charger allows users to charge from excess solar only, from solar and battery and from grid only, all at the press of a button. However, one of the biggest benefits of the Sigenergy ecosystem is their market-leading AI optimisation.
Controlling and managing your electricity usage is often the trickiest part of a homeowner’s switch to solar and battery. Although many apps and ecosystems offer a great level of control, it’s the time and effort it takes to optimise the systems with them that leads to many homeowners losing out on the savings they could be making. However, with Sigenergy that is not the case! Their AI mode options automatically optimise battery charging and discharging by analysing real-time electricity prices, local weather forecasts, user consumption habits, and solar generation to maximise your savings! It can even buy power when grid rates are low, store it, and use or sell it during expensive peak periods.
This takes the stress off homeowners so they can enjoy the savings without the effort of managing them! Click here if you want to read more about the MySigen App and its AI mode.
What This Godalming Homeowner Had To Say:
We can highly recommend Ezra, he did a great job. Communication was and is very efficient and polite, the customer service couldn’t be better. He is happy to advise and explain through the whole process and even afterwards when we have questions.
